Real happiness starts with telling yourself the truth, even when it hurts.No one wants to be seen as a liar . Liars are considered untrustworthy at best and immoral at worst. And yet, we are perfectly content to lie to ourselves all the time. “I’ll enjoy this sleeve of Oreos today because my diet starts tomorrow,” I might tell myself. Or, “I love my job; who cares that I complain about it constantly?” Or even—ironically—“I am always honest with myself.”

Who is a Liar?

Deceiving yourself shouldn’t make logical sense. After all, lying involves telling someone something you know to be untrue. When you are both the liar and one lied to, this means you have to both know the truth and not know the truth. In practice, that means willfully disregarding key knowledge to arrive at a conclusion that is more convenient than what the facts appear to suggest.

Everyone self-deceives, but that doesn’t make it harmless. At high levels, it is associated with poor mental health. At moderate levels, it can temporarily protect the self-deceiver from bad feelings but still presents a barrier to the deep well-being that comes from living with integrity. To be really happy, we must learn to be completely honest with ourselves.

But emotion, not policies, may be what actually divides us.In 2020, the match-making website OkCupid asked 5 million hopeful daters around the world: “Could you date someone who has strong political opinions that are the opposite of yours?” Sixty per cent said no, up from 53% a year before.

Without clear differences between political parties, they thought, citizens lack choices, and important issues don’t get deeply debated. Start with a topic that you want to learn about — anything from a new language, to how to play an instrument, to physics. Break down the components of the topic and examine each piece individually. Once you understand the individual parts, put them back together and see how they fit. You can do this by using <a href="https://jamesclear.com/feynman-mental-models">Feynman's mental models</a> to build a solid foundation in your mind

1. Pick a topic and study it

Attempt to describe your chosen topic to a child. Feynman used this approach when he was learning to draw; he would describe the subject to a child or even use hand gestures until he could explain it enough that they understood.

2. Explain the topic to a 5-year-old

Were you able to explain the topic in basic terms? What was the most challenging part of doing that? How did you feel when things got tough? Were there any points when you used jargon, as opposed to actually explaining? If so, repeat steps one through three until you understand the topic better and have filled additional voids in your knowledge.

3. Examine any gaps in your knowledge

Use what you learned in steps one through three to organize your learning into a system that works for you. Make the information even more understandable by removing jargon and replacing it with analogies or images. Additionally, make learning fun by creating an activity (a game, perhaps) around learning the topic from start to finish. For example, Feynman would often teach physics by presenting a series of questions on large sheets of paper joined in something like a flipbook. You can do this too: All you need is some time and effort

4. Organize, analyze and simplify

Named after Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman, the Feynman Technique involves breaking down information into small, manageable pieces and then using mental images to help understand it — and can be applied to convey complicated topics in a short amount of time.

How to Learn Anything in 4 Steps with the Feynman Technique

Making peace and moving forward is often easier said than done. Being able to forgive yourself requires empathy, compassion, kindness, and understanding. It also requires you to accept that forgiveness is a choice. Here are 12 tips you can try the next time you want to forgive yourself.

_Forgive yourself_

One of the first steps in learning how to forgive yourself is to focus on your emotions. Before you can move forward, you need to acknowledge your emotions. Give yourself permission to recognize and accept the feelings that have been triggered in you and welcome them.

1. Focus on your emotions.

If you make a mistake and continue to struggle with letting it go, acknowledge out loud what you learned from the mistake.When you give a voice to the thoughts in your head and the emotions in your heart, you may free yourself from some of the burdens. You also imprint in your mind what you learned from your actions and consequences.

2. Acknowledge the mistake.

Englander says to think of each “mistake” as a learning experience that holds the key to moving forward faster and more consistently in the future. Reminding ourselves that we did the best we could with the tools and knowledge we had at the time, will help us forgive ourselves and move forward.

3. Think of each mistake as a learning experience.

If you make a mistake but have a hard time putting it out of your mind, Pickell says to visualize your thoughts and feelings about the mistake going into a container, such as a mason jar or box. Then, tell yourself you are putting this aside for now and will return to it if and when it will benefit you.

4. Give yourself permission to put this process on hold.

Journaling can help you understand your inner critic and develop self-compassion. Write out a “conversation” between you and your inner critic. This can help you identify your thoughts and will help you forgive yourselfYou can also use journaling time to make a list of the qualities you like about yourself, including your strengths and skills. This can help boost your self-confidence when you’re feeling down about a mistake you made.

5. Have a conversation with your inner critic.

We are our own worst critics, right? One important action tip is to notice when that harsh voice comes in and then write it down. You might be surprised by what your inner critic actually says to you.

6. Notice when you are being self-critical.

Sometimes it can be difficult to recognize the thoughts that are getting in the way of forgiveness. If you’re struggling to sort out your inner critic, practice this exercise:<ul><li>On one side of a piece of paper, write down what your inner critic says (which tends to be critical and irrational).</li><li>On the other side of the paper, write a self-compassionate and rational response for each thing you wrote on the other side of the paper.</li></ul>

7. Quiet the negative messages of you inner critic.

If the mistake you made hurt another person, you need to determine the best course of action. Do you want to talk to this person and apologize? If you’re on the fence about what to do, you might want to consider making amends. This goes beyond saying sorry to a person you’ve hurt. Instead, try to fix the mistake you’ve made. One study found that forgiving ourselves for hurting another is easier if we first make amends.

8. Get clear about what you want.

Oftentimes, it’s easier to tell someone else what to do than to take our own advask yourself what you would tell your best friend if they were sharing this mistake they made with you, and then take your own advice.If you’re having a difficult time working through this in your head, it can help to role-play with your friend. Ask them to take on your mistake. They will tell you what happened and how they are struggling to forgive themselves.You get to be the advice giver and practice telling your friend how to move on.

9. Take your own advice.

It’s human nature to spend time and energy replaying our mistakes. While some processing is important, going over what happened again and again won’t allow you to forgive yourself. When you catch yourself playing the “I’m a horrible person” tape, stop yourself and focus on one positive action step. Interrupting the thought pattern can help you move away from the negative experience and reduce stress and anxiety.

10. Quit playing the tape.

If your first response to a negative situation is to criticize yourself, it’s time to show yourself some kindness and compassion. The only way to begin the journey to forgiveness is to be kind and compassionate with yourself. This takes time, patience, and a reminder to yourself that you’re worthy of forgiveness.

11. Show kindness and compassion.

If you’re struggling to forgive yourself, you may benefit from talking to a professional. Talking to a counselor who can help you learn how to break these unhealthy patterns in your life and learn new and healthier ways of coping with mistakes.

12. Seek professional help.

Making peace and moving forward is often easier said than done. Being able to forgive yourself requires empathy, kindness, and understanding. Whether you’re trying to work through a minor mistake or one that impacts all areas of your life, the steps you need to take in order to forgive yourself will look the same.

12 Tips for Forgiving Yourself

To look at whether time travel is possible we need to distinguish between travelling back and travelling forwards. “From a philosophical point of view, we are constantly time travelling! As we age in our ordinary everyday lives, we are forever travelling into the future'.  “The more interesting idea is being able to access a future everyone else is travelling slowly towards. So you move forward without ageing. And that, in theory, is actually perfectly possible,” he says.

Time TRAVEL- A One Way Ticket?

You may have heard of Cryogenics. This is when someone who’s died is frozen instead of being buried or cremated. The theory is they can be “woken up” in the future when we have the technology to bring them back to life. Or a machine or device could be developed so that some people age more slowly than others around them. This way they’d live longer and see a future beyond the average person’s life span.

Going Forward In Time

Another method might involve travelling in a rocket/spaceship at a very high speed, close to the speed of light. “We can’t establish equality with the speed of light but it is possible, in theory, to travel nearly as fast as the speed of light,” adds Dr Steane. So imagine you’re in a spaceship travelling very fast away from the Earth and you stay in orbit for a year. You'd age at the same rate as if you were still on the Earth, by a year, but when you returned, the earth may have aged hundreds of years. “This is way beyond the technology we have at the moment, but in theory, it's possible.”

So we may one day be able to time travel forwards but what about going back?“Here we hit the philosophical problem that always comes up when you discuss travelling back in time,” says Dr Steane. "Suppose you could go back in time and you accidentally killed your grandparents. Wouldn’t that mean you couldn’t exist either?"So how could you go back in time and see people who’ve died - some of them hundreds of years ago?It's very complex.

Going Back?

However, going back in time goes against the laws of physics- some processes are reversible and some irreversible.Processes like an avalanche can’t unhappen. Likewise, on a smaller scale, if you drop an egg, you can’t unbreak it.A spinning top or a pendulum, is reversible because it keeps moving, repeating itself. Nothing really happens. “Within physics, we’re very aware of these issues. The world is irreversible. And so are our lives. We grow, we age, we die,” says Dr Steane.You can’t reverse the effects of a catastrophic event. And that’s why going back in time is not likely to be possible.

If you’re feeling disappointed that we can’t literally travel back in time then remember there’s nowhere you can’t go in your own mind.Think about history lessons where you’re asked to imagine yourself in someone else’s shoes from long ago or when you look at old photos of fun times. That’s time travel. And what about when you read a book or listen to a story told by a grandparent?You can transport yourself to anywhere back in time and the beauty is you can come back. Since isn’t the greatest fear of time travelling getting stuck in a different time zone and never being able to return?
