What does it mean to learn how to live? Where does one even begin? The existential philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre once said, “Everything in the world has been figured out, except how to live.” My interview with Nate Anderson (author of In Emergency, Break Glass) discussed how to live — according to the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche.

How To Say Yes To Life According To Neitzsche 

I want to learn more and more to see as beautiful what is necessary in things; then I shall be one of those who make things beautiful. Amor fati: let that be my love henceforth! I do not want to wage war against what is ugly. I do not want to accuse; I do not even want to accuse those who accuse. Looking away shall be my only negation. And all in all… I wish to be only a Yes-sayer.

Similarly, the psychologist Viktor Frankl explained in his book Yes to Life (published after his death) that to say yes to life is meaningful and possible under all circumstances. Anderson writes, For Nietzsche, the point of life is not to get through content; it is not to master knowledge. “It is to learn how to live. And then to actually live.”

According to Nietzsche, learning begins with self-knowledge. “That’s the heart of the approach that Nietzsche develops toward knowledge: Know yourself,” writes Anderson. Know your limits and embrace them. Reject the burden of any information that does not contribute to living your life.

But, where does one begin to learn how to live?

Nietzsche’s information management theory emphasizes slow reading, rereading, not reading — even forgetting. To truly live, we must be willing not to know many things. Likewise, a previous piece on Knowing the Basic Rules for Life discussed Leo Tolstoy’s advice on sticking to the basics:“It is better to know several basic rules of life than to study many unnecessary sciences.”

Learning to live is a call to action for Nietzsche. “The call to stop sitting in the shade,” observes Anderston, “to stop being a spectator to one’s own life, to think, to speak, to live.” An ingredient in this call to action is a goal or meaning for life. In Human, All Too Human, Nietzsche advised,"In a journey, we commonly forget its goal. Almost every vocation is chosen and entered upon as means to an end, but is continued as the ultimate end. Forgetting our purpose is the most frequent form of folly."

In one of his notebooks, published after his death, Nietzsche writes eloquently about this need for goals: “If the ‘why’ of one’s life is clear, then the ‘how’ will take care of itself.”

Saying yes to life requires us to begin understanding ourselves and our reason for living. Nietzsche stressed that we could not return to the past. “We have burned the boats; all that remains is for us to be brave and let happen what may. Let us only go forward, let us make a move!”

Train empathy - Being able to put yourself in someone else's shoes makes it easier to understand how they came to the conclusions they did. Even if you don't understand the other's point of view, try to understand why he thinks the way he does and always respect individuality.

2. To develop the ability to look at a problem through different prisms

Actively participate in debates and prepare yourself by researching and comparing arguments. Always look for (reliable) foundations that deny or corroborate your arguments. Be open to looking for information that goes against your ideas.

To develop open-mindedness and flexibility… By keeping an open mind, you are maintaining flexible thinking, which means that you are able to change or adapt it if better additions or suggestions arise. You can develop this by having friendly debates with people you know have a different opinion than you do. Try to be open to their arguments and points of view and not judge.Question stereotypes. Ask yourself where they come from and why you have them. Great Stereotypes are often nothing more than an exacerbated generalization, and these are blinders for our eyes.

Practice balanced thinking. This thought implies overcoming impulsiveness and automatic reactions, taking a few moments to reflect before taking action. Look before you leap. Practice knowing yourself and others. Learn to understand and master your emotions, observe and analyze your own behavior, find more “healthy” and appropriate ways to react. To not get carried away by emotions.

5. Impartiality

If you're stuck making a decision, don't artificially limit your options. We usually think of decisions as if they were binary. By thinking of decisions as binary – black or white – you are missing out on a range of alternatives. Put all options on the table, even those that seem absurd. Take a closer look at the various options to find the best solution.

6. To develop logical, factual and systematic analysis…

Create a series of experiments to validate whether the result is desirable. In many situations, it's best to "put your foot in the water" before fully committing. This is a validation process, where you test ideas on a small scale before committing 100% to any decision.To get some perspective, focus on the future. Take some emotional distance, imagining the potential implications and consequences the decision will have in the future, outlining all the possibilities

7. To make inferences… Try to listen to your intuition. Sometimes our mind acts in a concrete way that we cannot rationally explain. Intuition is often conceptualized as the result of unconscious processing of information, that is, as performing an internal analysis of information that we do not have processed at an unconscious level. You can listen to your intuition by paying attention to the thoughts that come to your mind and writing them down in a notebook.

7. To make inferences…

Exercising Critical Thinking is essential for anyone who wants to improve their skills. This approach allows for well-formed opinions and more assertive decision-making. By developing Critical Thinking you will be adding potential and personal value.

According to the World Economic Forum Report, Critical Thinking is the 4th most important skill by 2025.

When you limit your time spent on specific tasks, you give yourself permission to make choices. Instead of fighting perfectionism , you learn to stop when things are good enough.

Rescuing your time can help you with this in a number of ways.First, you can set a daily goal for total time worked and get an alert when you go over. For example, setting goals for total device time, time spent on distracting apps, and mobile time so you know when you're getting off track.Next, you can set daily goals for your time in specific tasks — like writing, designing, or coding — and get alerts when you’ve gone over.

Rescue Time

When your mental resources are limited, you need to make sure they’re going to the right tasks.Burnout decimates your motivation, making working on projects you’re uninterested in an agonizing process. Dr. Christina Maslach, one of the pioneers of occupational burnout research writes:“People experiencing burnout are not simply exhausted or overwhelmed by their workload. They also have lost a psychological connection with their work, which has implications for their motivation and identity.”

Say no to things that suck the creativity out of you

To rebuild your creative confidence post-burnout, you need to rebuild that identity in your work. That means reigniting your spark with creative tasks.As Emily Haines, lead singer of the band Metric writes:“The only time that I feel things start to spin out is when I buy into the whole ‘work really hard and then just don’t work at all’ idea…The whole point of being an artist is that it can provide a fluid life.”Learning how to say no isn’t easy (in work and in life). But it’s a key step if you want to move past creative burnout.

Sometimes you need to tackle a problem head-on. With creative burnout, it’s often better to take a side-on approach.While your first impulse will most likely be to dive back into what you’re used to, that can quickly backfire. It’s easy to overstretch your limits when you go back into old daily routines . Instead, look for a creative task with lower stakes to help ease you back into things.

Find a completely unrelated creative outlet

Unrelated creative tasks can help inspire you, but there are also other ways to fill your “creative well.” The architect and designer Emily Fischer writes:“You have to feed yourself creatively. You have to give yourself that creative fuel. I hate using the term ‘self-care’ but I think that’s a part of it.”How you give yourself self-care is up to you. It could mean going to bed an hour earlier. Making time for a walk in nature. Going to an art show. Or even just doing something fun.

One of the hardest parts of bouncing back from creative burnout is dealing with the nagging voice inside your head.The self-critic is something we all face. At times it can get so loud that it drowns out our ability to push through.There’s a simple tool you can use to silence your inner critic: deadlines. We’re talking about short, yet strict deadlines. Let’s say you need to write a chapter of a book. Instead of sitting down and banging your head against your screen for hours on end, break it up into tiny increments and set tight deadlines.

Daily Rituals explains how geniuses and successful people have developed certain minuscule habits in their daily routines that helped them achieve greatness.

This is not something humanity discovered recently, as history shows. Psychologists and researchers have tried to wrap their heads around ways to trick the mind into being more focused and centered for a long time now. Luckily, they did discover some pretty interesting habits and practices that can help us do so.

While they don’t do these things similarly, they do repeat certain actions that help them become more productive. One of them is working at a certain time during the day. Some artists prefer working at night, while others rely on the daytime to do things. Find your best time and try to focus on work as much as possible during those hours. The other way people become productive is by consuming certain drinks, like coffee.

Lesson 1: Inspiration can come from anything, from daily rituals, a warm drink, or a sunset.

Beethoven and Mozart were both known for drinking large amounts of coffee to become productive. While the book recommends staying away from too much of everything, and completely avoiding dangerous substances, it’s alright if you indulge in cups of tea or coffee to get in the mood for work.These accomplished people usually enjoyed such treats in their favorite spot right before work, which is also psychologically proven to boost efficiency. Our brain associates these actions with a prework sort of workout that gets us in the mood.

Lastly, writers and researchers often look for inspiration within their surroundings. They try to draw inspiration from a sunrise, plants, animals, or other elements from natural words. People that are close to you can also help you get into the mood for work. So make sure to surround yourself with these types of humans.

The book talks about different authors and their ways of staying close to their craft, becoming inspired, and writing effectively. Some found peace and motivation in nature, so they’d take long walks until inspiration struck them. Then they’d rush home to create and design their pieces.Others found that sexual intercourse or pleasure derived from bodily functions gives them enough inspiration to write for days. Baths or long showers also seemed to be popular choices for some authors. The point is, that everyone has different ways of becoming connected to themselves and becoming inspired.

Lesson 2: There are numerous ways to get inspired and stay connected to your craft.

As a writer, it can be challenging to start creating out of thin air and seeing a blank page can be that much more demoralizing. For this reason, you have to find what can help you get in the mood for work and practice that when you feel like you’re lacking motivation.

Lastly, keep in mind that there’s no wrong or right in the creative process. Everyone gets inspired or works on their craft in their particular way. What worked for these people might not prove to be efficient for you, but that’s alright. The point is to find your muse! Whether it means working during the day or night, drinking coffee, taking a shower, or anything at all.
