Love at first sight: Is it possible? Do people really meet and in moments simply know they're meant to be? New evidence suggests: Yes, they do.The idea is wonderfully romantic: Two strangers see each other "across a crowded room," there's an instant attraction, an electric spark, and suddenly they've found their match and never look back. In a world where dating often requires a lot of work—that comes with disappointment, rejection, and uncertainty—falling in love at first sight has strong appeal.We look at some findings from a recent study on love at first sight.

Love At First Sight

People really do report experiencing love at first sight in the instant they encounter a person. It's a strong initial attraction that would later become a relationship. One compelling counter-argument—that people have biased memories and essentially create the illusion of having fallen for each other instantly—isn't an appropriate explanation for all cases of love at first sight.

Love at First Sight Isn't Just Biased Memory

In this study, strangers were more likely to report experiencing love at first sight with physically attractive others; in fact, one rating higher in <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/beauty">attractiveness</a> on the scale that the researchers used corresponded with a nine times greater likelihood that others would report that electric love-at-first-sight feeling.

You're More Likely to Feel Love at First Sight with Beautiful People

The researchers aren't sure why this happens, but it begs more investigation. Might women be less inclined to this experience because they are more selective in whom they might date, as other research has shown? Men might, for example, report this experience with multiple potential partners. But whether this translates into relationships is another question.

Men Report Love at First Sight More than Women

A comparison of participant reports of love at first sight showed that it's typically a one-sided phenomenon; this suggests that shared instant love isn't very common. The researchers suspect, however, that one partner's intense initial experience could help shape the other person's recollection, shifting it toward a belief that he or she also experienced love at first sight.

Love at first sight isn't usually mutual

The kind of qualities that are known to reflect love—<a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/relationships">intimacy</a>, commitment, passion—are not particularly strong in those first moments when people say they've fallen in love at first sight. At least, these emotions are not experienced to the same degree as they are by people in established relationships. The love-at-first-sight experience appears open to these emotions to a greater extent than first meetings where love at first sight is not reported.

Love at First Sight Isn't Really "Love"

Science favors the romantics. Love at first sight actually is experienced by people, but it's not so much "love" or "passion," Instead, it's a strong pull or attraction that makes someone particularly open to the possibilities of a relationship. Love at first sight can happen multiple times, and maybe the instances where it fizzles or simply never translates into a relationship are forgotten. But when love at first sight does launch a sustained relationship, the story is a great one.

Is Love at First Sight Real?

Exceptional relationships can be developed. They have six hallmarks: <ul><li>You can be more fully yourself, and so can the other person. </li><li>Both of you are willing to be vulnerable. </li><li>You trust that self-disclosures will not be used against you. </li><li>You can be honest with each other. </li><li>You deal with conflict productively. </li><li>Both of you are committed to each other’s growth and development.</li></ul>In these relationships, you feel seen, known, and appreciated for who you really are, not an edited version of yourself.

Exceptional relationships

It has several characteristics. <ul><li>One is a willingness to let go of the idea that your way of doing things is always best. </li><li>Another is being game to try new things and take the risk of making mistakes. </li><li>A third is seeing mistakes as learning opportunities rather than something to be embarrassed about and hide. Curiosity is key. </li></ul>Having an open mind for continuous learning is a wonderful way to live. It means you’re open to your own development.

A learning mindset

Most of us have countless interactions each day with people who don’t really know us well. At times, you may yearn for deeper and more meaningful connections, but you don’t always know how to get there. Letting yourself be more fully known is crucial to developing exceptional relationships. Self-disclosure creates more opportunities to connect and increases trust. It is also enormously validating to be accepted for who you really are. That said, it’s not risk-free.

Letting yourself be more fully known

Consider three concentric rings that represent decreasing safety as you move out from the center. <ul><li>In the middle, is the Zone of Comfort: what you feel completely safe to say or do.</li><li>The outermost ring is the Zone of Danger: things you wouldn’t consider doing.</li><li>The Zone of Learning: The ring between “Comfort” and “Danger”, where you are unsure about how another will respond -  the zone in which people learn. Learning at the risk of unintentionally ending up in Danger, test the waters by stretching into the zone of learning by 15%. You can then consider venturing out another 15 % from there.</li></ul>

Try the 15 percent rule

Sharing facts starts to build a larger picture of who we are but only goes so far. What tends to have more impact is sharing feelings. <ul><li> Feelings can indicate the intensity of an experience. In reacting to another’s behavior, you could be slightly bothered, annoyed, upset, angry, or furious. These different degrees are crucial in human interaction; they illustrate a lot about who you are. </li><li>Feelings provide color, drawing others to us in a way that being utterly unemotional and rational does not. </li></ul>

Social scientists call the belief in our ability to act in the world “having agency.” But too often, people think they have no choice in how to respond to what has happened to them.

Having agency

In the absence of data, people will make stuff up. Everybody draws conclusions when interacting with others. The less we reveal, the more others will fill in the blanks in order to make sense of what they see. When we are too reserved with our feelings, we actually lose control over how we are seen.

The costs of silence

Empathy is the act of conveying not only that you understand the other’s feelings but also that you can identify with them. It is different from sympathy, even though they’re often used interchangeably. Sympathy involves acknowledging someone is in pain and providing comfort or support; it does not necessarily involve identifying with how they are feeling. Sympathy is also often linked with pity, which makes many people feel even smaller. Sympathy, unlike empathy, doesn’t encourage more disclosure from the other. In fact, sometimes it can have the opposite effect.

Empathy and sympathy 

This has several dimensions. <ol><li>Are you speaking to what they want as opposed to what you want? </li><li>Are you responding at the same emotional level? </li><li>Are you seeing the world as they see it? </li><li>Are you not responding to what the other really wants? </li></ol>﻿For the other person to hear anything you have to say, much less tell you more about themselves, they have to know that you seek to understand them and their position. Once that connection is made, then it is possible to bring up other issues and delve into more questions.

Meeting someone where they are

It is a lot more complicated than it seems. <ol><li>You truly don’t understand something at all. The best way to make sure your curiosity is authentic is to hold the mindset that, in spite of how perceptive you think you might be and how well you think you know another person, you don’t actually know what’s going on for them.  </li><li> You think you know all about it and are just asking questions to test your hypothesis. You’re not genuinely curious. You’ve largely made up your mind and are “leading the witness” to prove your case. That stance is unlikely to encourage the other to be more open and revealing. </li></ol>

Being curious

Asking the right kind can help encourage someone to share. <ul><li>Open-ended questions widen the scope of the conversation by generating options, new perspectives, or new ways of thinking about a situation. The most effective open-ended questions don’t begin with the word “why.” “Why” questions tend to drive people into their heads and out of their feelings. </li><li> Closed-ended questions, which usually can be answered with “yes” or “no,” narrow the conversation and are more likely to be felt as intrusive and judgmental. </li></ul>

Not all questions are created equal

Advice-giving makes it easy to misunderstand what the other really wants. People go to others for many reasons. Perhaps they want a chance to think out loud. Perhaps they simply want to vent and seek a sympathetic ear. Sometimes they just want support and empathy, rather than help figuring out a solution. The listener needs to be clear about what the other person wants.If you are going to provide someone with advice, you have to understand the situation fully, really know what the other wants, and take their style and approach into account. Also, most importantly, set aside what you would do.

Giving advice 

For a relationship to be sustainable, each person has to have enough of their needs met, and each must give things up. Over time, the benefits have to exceed the costs. As relationships develop and each person allows themselves to be more fully known, the two of them can learn how to increase the benefits and reduce the costs.

All relationships have trade-offs

Influence discrepancies exist in most relationships, though minor ones are rarely a barrier to talking honestly and coming to an effective solution. However, a significant difference in influence often results in a dysfunctional cycle.

Costs of large discrepancies

<ul><li>Assuming that your needs are secondary to the other’s</li><li> Not listening to your feeling</li><li>Letting yourself be interrupted </li><li>Backing down when someone disagrees with you</li><li> Avoiding conflict—not disagreeing with the other</li><li>Not giving feedback, assuming the problem is probably yours</li><li>Being concerned about being liked/approved of and seeing that as most important </li><li>Minimizing the importance of your comments</li><li>Not taking credit for your accomplishments</li><li>Not pointing out a problem unless you have a solution.</li></ul>The single most limiting one is the fear of conflict—believing that conflict is a sign of a flawed relationship.

How you give away influence

The information may say something about the giver, and it may say something about the receiver. But it is all data, and more data is better than less. Quite simply, you’re better off knowing than not. ﻿Accepting the validity of someone’s feedback also doesn’t mean you must act on it. Feedback is information for you to decide what to do with. It’s data with which to expand your choices.

People use the “feedback sandwich,” thinking it will make difficult feedback easier to hear: starting with something positive (to soften up the other person), then saying something negative, and ending with something positive so they will feel good. Unfortunately, this approach rarely works. As soon as you start with the positive, the other’s defenses go up as they wait for the “but.” They brush aside the good news and don’t take it in. The feedback sandwich is often utilized because you’re concerned the recipient will feel totally rejected if you don’t throw in some positive reinforcement.

We are selective about friends because not everyone is able to exchange thoughts and feelings with us.

Things that draw people together as friends

One of the most important techniques to calm down is having the power to hold on, even in demanding and hard situations, to a distinction between what someone does and what they meant to do.

The power to hold on

Part of the reason for our pattern of imagining negative plots and thinking that all people want is to cause us harm is the psychological phenomenon called self-hatred.
The less we like ourselves, the more we appear in our own eyes as possible targets for disrespect and harm.

Why we jump to dark conclusions

When we carry a baggage of self-hatred around with us (that operates outside of our awareness) we'll constantly seek confirmation from the outside world that we really are the worthless people we consider us to be.
This process starts in our childhood, when someone close to us left us feeling dirty and guilty. As a result, we are traveling through society and living our lives assuming the worst.

How a negative self-image impacts our life

We would be much calmer around adults if we could act around them in the way we naturally act around children.
Small kids sometimes behave in really annoying ways, but we rarely feel personally wounded by their behavior, because we don't assign a negative intention to the way they act (quite the opposite, we find the most benevolent interpretations).

Treating the adults around us as children

Motives are crucial, but sadly we are very bad at perceiving and interpreting the motives that happened to be involved in the events that most frustrate us.
We usually feel that other adults have something against us, that all the actions they are taking and that frustrate us have the intention to cause us distress, to take advantage of us.

Our broken perception of the people around us

He developed a formula for calming himself and his pupils down in the face of irritating people.
He said to never see people as evil; just try to identify what is driving a person to behave in negative ways. It is a calming thought to imagine that they’re suffering in a way we can’t see. Being mature means learning to imagine this area of pain even if you don't have enough evidence about it.

How to Remain Calm With People

A study on longevity found that it was not weight, eating habits, exercise, air pollution, etc. that affected how long someone lives.
Only two things made a huge difference: 
<ul>
<li>frequency of social support</li>
<li>how integrated peope were in their community.</li>
</ul>

People who have friends live longer

Most studies show that natural human communities and personal social networks have a typical size of about 150.
<ul>
<li>Survey data shows that the average wedding has 144 guests. </li>
<li>Typical medieval English villages - 150 people.</li>
<li>The average number of Facebook friends and email contacts are between 150 to 250.</li>
<li>Most people have 5 friends they contact weekly, about 15 they talk to monthly, roughly 50 they hear from every six months, and 150 they connect with annually. </li>
</ul>
Friendships are fragile. If you don't take care of those relationships, they will disappear.

The math in behavioural science

Friendships are more fragile than family and need more care. While nobody likes to lose friends, you can expect to lose a good friend about every two years.
You have to be deliberate with your friendships. Friendships need regular face-to-face contact if you want to keep them.

Stay in touch

Studies show that people said thanks 5.5% of the time to friends and family. We simply expect family and friends to accept our request as a matter of course. We show more gratitude to strangers.
A little gratitude can go a long way in maintaining relationships. If you messed up, apologize.

Showing gratitude to the people we love

The depth of friendships is more important than frequency. Sharing emotional experiences and events with one another is a critical element.
When people share intense ups and downs, it creates a bond that cannot be easily broken. So, be vulnerable. Open up. Ask for advice. Share what you're going through emotionally.

Quality over quantity in friendships

We have something like a fixed "friendship budget." Extroverts may have more friends, but their friendships are not as close as those of introverts. We spend about 3,5 hours a day on social interaction. Your closest 5 friends get 40%, the other 10 in the group of 15 get the next 20%. And the last 135 friends get about 37 seconds a day. 
The lesson is that you can't add time; you can only distribute it differently. Know who is important to you and prioritise them.

Budget appropriately

Research indicates the common factors that predict how satisfied people are with the gathering:

<li>The number of people (more is better)</li>
<li>The frequency of laughter</li>
<li>Reminisching about the past</li>
<li>The consumption of alcohol</li>
</ul>
The biggest point to note is to limit the small talk and open up and communicate meaningful stuff.

A study showed that our behaviour is most influenced by those we are close to.

People often find themselves involved with an emotionally unavailable person at some point. The person with deficits in emotional intelligence turn things around on others, avoid taking personal responsibility, and defends their position at all cost.

Feeling pity for someone is doable for an emotionally shortsighted partner. However, the partner needs to avoid the temptation to save and rescue. For example, "I'm sorry your dog died. I bought you a puppy so that you can feel better. You'll thank me later."
It is better to sympathise and encourage instead. "I am sorry your dog died. I feel bad for you. I hope you feel better tomorrow." It may sound hollows, but it provides support.

Author Gary Chapman developed the theory that there are five basic ways romantic partners give and receive love.
The five love languages are:

The majority of us have one or two dominant love languages, but each of us speaks all five languages to some degree. By learning how to 'speak' each other's preferred love language, you're ensuring both of you feel supported and seen.

If your partner's love language is gifts, they'll put the item on display or wear it every day, But the surest way to find out if your partner's love language is gifts is to ask them.

If the gifts love language doesn't come naturally to you, you should still learn the language if your partner speaks it.
Look at things in your daily life from a gift-giving perspective. It doesn't have to be expensive, just little reminders that they're always on your mind. If you know someone who speaks gifts as their love language, then not getting them a gift on a special occasion would be very hurtful to them, as would approaching the gift-giving as more a chore than an opportunity.
